Favorite referencing style
Author–date styles are my favorite.
Why I became an editor
I studied mathematics (engineering and biology) and law at university. I also worked in academia as a research manager in mathematics, business management studies, and hospitality. I learned music from a young age and still play violin and piano. I also read a lot, particularly fantasy and science fiction. I love learning new things. Proofreading allows me to learn every day and help other people at the same time.
Background and experience
I recently proofread a couple of books (one work of fiction and a memoir), a doctoral thesis (music), and a website for a provider of global citizenship education. I have been a research manager at a couple of British universities; one was a school of mathematics, and the other was a faculty of business and management. Part of my job included proofreading grant applications and ensuring the requirements of the funding call were met.
Why I love proofreading and editing
It’s satisfying to make a document look perfect. I am particularly interested in proofreading mathematics, law, and classical music. I used Harvard referencing for my math PhD and the Open University's Oscola-based system for my LLM. I'm happy to learn other referencing systems.
Favorite book:
Mort by Terry Pratchett is my favorite book.
Hobbies:
My hobbies include reading fantasy and science fiction and playing the piano.
Editing tips:
I skim through the document first to get an impression of the layout and content. Then I check the references to see how consistent they are and get an idea of how much time I’ll need.
