Why I became an editor
I am a driving instructor in the UK. During the pandemic, I was unable to work, so I started looking for other ways to fill my time. When somebody suggested proofreading, I didn't know why I hadn't thought of it sooner! I have always been an avid reader, and proofreading just seemed to make sense. I started my first course during the first lockdown and I haven’t looked back.
Background and experience
My background is in hospitality, so I have lots of experience dealing with all different types of people. It often came with unsociable hours, and as a single parent of three children, this was difficult to manage. So, I decided to make a change. I trained to be a driving instructor and began my new career, which required great attention to detail and infinite patience. I am also a certified driving test nerves specialist, and I recently became a proofreader.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I love proofreading and editing because every time I work on a piece of writing, I learn something new. I love the satisfaction of helping people to make their writing the best it can be. I love the intricacies of the English language and how it is always evolving. I love how proofreading keeps my mind sharp and focused.
Favorite book:
I don't have one specific favorite book, but I love a good psychological thriller. Some of my favorite authors are Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, and Lisa Regan.
Hobbies:
When I'm not proofreading, I am usually spending time with my kids, socializing with friends, or planning my wedding.
Editing tips:
I find it useful to first read over a document before making any corrections. I then read the document again and again, correcting any errors I find and following the author's style guide.
