Favorite referencing style

My favorite style is Chicago because it's what I've been using since I was a student and it's familiar. I also love that a writer can include so much interesting information in the notes.

Why I became an editor

I was always a bookworm and a lover of words. Writing and editing came naturally, but it never occurred to me to make a living with it. I went to graduate school for art history – my favorite subject in college – and realized that I loved writing essays and papers. After completing my master’s degree, I became a college instructor, and I couldn’t stop correcting student essays in my mind. Becoming an editor and proofreader allows me to fix writing errors myself, which I find deeply satisfying.

Background and experience

I’ve been a freelance copyeditor since the summer of 2021, working mostly on academic manuscripts like journal articles, books, and exhibition catalogs. I also did a stint as the sole copyeditor for a career mentorship nonprofit, working with young writers from around the world on nonfiction articles for the company website.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love learning new things. I work on manuscripts on so many different topics! I also love the sense of satisfaction that comes from fixing errors and figuring out how to make a passage flow more naturally.

Favorite book:

I've been reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon since it started back in the 90s.

Hobbies:

I love cooking, watching movies, visiting art museums, and working out.

Editing tips:

I have to make several passes, ideally with lots of time in between. This lets me approach each pass with fresh eyes and catch more errors.
