Favorite referencing style
APA, possibly because I enjoy proofreading the topics it is associated with.
Why I became an editor
I studied accounting with law at university and went on to become a management accountant. After a stint abroad, I decided to set up a travel business, which is still in operation. My varied career provides an excellent background for proofreading. Accountancy requires great attention to detail, and writing articles requires a wide range of vocabulary and in-depth subject knowledge. Proofreading enables me to read and understand a range of topics and help others improve their work.
Background and experience
As a management accountant, I have had specialised roles in derivatives and project management (within the oil industry) and as a forensic accountant (for a small private firm).
I started my travel business almost five years ago and have increased my destination knowledge. I have taken additional training in accessible travel, an area of importance to me.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I understand how difficult it can be to step back from the details and check your own work. I find it very satisfying to look at a piece of writing from a detached point of view to focus on readability and suggest small changes that can make a huge difference.
Favorite book:
‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee.
Hobbies:
I like to spend time with my family and play hockey!
Editing tips:
First, I highlight anything which seems 'odd' to me as I read through so I can check it thoroughly later. I have a checklist I use to make sure I cover everything, such as searching for double spaces.
