Why I became an editor
Proofreading and editing were important parts of my career in corporate communication. I was responsible for ensuring that the company’s communication was clear, correct, effective, and aligned with the brand’s voice. When I changed over to soft-skills training, putting out grammatically correct and easy-to-understand training material was imperative. When I decided to get back to work after a break, I chose proofreading and editing because I enjoy it and have the right background for it.
Background and experience
With a master’s in English and a post-graduate diploma in business management, corporate communication was the perfect career choice for me. My early career focused on marketing and corporate communication content development and its management in the IT industry. I also got exposure to editing technical/software user manuals. My last assignment was for a people development organization, where I developed customized training programmes and executed training assignments.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I enjoy adding value to content by making it clear, correct, and concise. I especially enjoy editing business documents, as I have done a lot of that in my career. A refined piece of writing can help the writer be more effective and create the desired impact.
Favorite book:
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is my favorite book.
Hobbies:
I love reading, solving crossword puzzles, listening to music – Bollywood songs being my favorite – and dancing. I also love spending time with my teenage twin daughters.
Editing tips:
I find referring to checklists to be useful when I proofread.
