5 Ways to Save Money at University

Students are always happy to find some ways to save money and, with the end of semester getting close, I’m sure you’ll be happy to learn about some ways to save a few dollars! Here are our top 5 cash saving tips.

1. Know What Money You’re Owed

No one likes to keep tallies, but the odd 10 bucks lent to a friend here and there can really add up. So why not take the pain out of keeping track of money with an app? Splitwise is a free app that can help you and your friends to figure out who owes what to whom. You can even request and pay money to each other with it!

2. Budget

We know how to keep you ‘appy (groan…)! Another app that can help you save a few bucks is Track My Spend helps you by keeping track of what you spend, as well as letting you set a weekly or monthly spend limit.

3. Stay Independent

Renting through letting agencies can be really expensive as they tend to add unexplained fees to everything from renewing your contract to picking up your keys. If you can, find an independent landlord to rent from. Gumtree can be really handy for this as it allows you to search for rental properties in your area and contact the letter directly.

4. One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure

Sign up to sites like Freecycle to find out what is being given away for free in your area. Get into the habit of checking these sites before you go shopping and you’ll see the savings mount up!

5. Get Paid Holidays

Yep, it sounds too good to be true, but if you and your housemates are going to be away for the summer, why not consider letting out your house on Airbnb? Just make sure that your rental agreement allows sub-letting and that your housemates are all ok with it!
