Why I became an editor
I am a lifelong lover of words and have always been the "go-to" informal proofreader among my family and friends. I was a tutor for foreign exchange students during college and considered a career teaching ESL, but I ultimately went down a different path, working in the nonprofit sector for over a decade.
Editing combines my passion for helping others with my love of the written word, and I am thrilled to be part of the Proofed team.
Background and experience
I have worked in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors for over a decade. Recently, I began taking on editing work through my employer (a research organization in the area of higher education), and I have also been freelancing for an editing agency for the past few months. I am currently enrolled in the UC San Diego Copyediting Certificate program.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I have always had an eagle eye for spotting errors, and I take pride in putting the finishing touches on a client's work. I also enjoy the breadth of topics I am able to explore through my editing work; I always learn something interesting and new! I especially enjoy proofreading for nonprofit organizations, including brochures, flyers, grant proposals, research briefs, annual reports, and websites.
Favorite book:
A relatively recent read that has stuck with me is "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah.
Hobbies:
When I'm not proofreading, I am usually spending time with my young son and daughter!
Editing tips:
I find that if I am having a particularly difficult time with a specific passage, taking a break and coming back to it later with fresh eyes can really help!
