Why I became an editor

I studied music at university, which involved instruction in performance, music history and cultural musicology. In addition to my musical studies, I took courses in journalism and creative writing, both of which have helped me to be a clear and flexible writer.

As both a musician and writer, I understand the importance of balancing creativity and clarity to effectively tell a story.

Background and experience

Development Manager
Dunedin Consort, Edinburgh
2019–present
From composing compelling copy to fostering ongoing relationships between supporters and the company, this position requires a balance of patience and initiative in order to achieve long-term goals for funding and support.

Music Administrator
St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh
2016–2019
This role in a dynamic administrative team required me to regularly call upon my musical knowledge to contribute content for programmes and advertising.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love stories. Whether it's hearing about someone's day or reading about the origins of the universe, I have always been a sucker for compelling storytelling. I love reading fiction, plays, mythology, philosophy and history.

Favorite book:

I love Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

Hobbies:

If I'm not proofreading, you can generally find me teaching yoga to children (from very little to very grown-up), making sourdough or going for a run!

Editing tips:

Every document is different, so I like to read through it first to get a general impression of the author's voice, subject and tone. This helps me understand how best to approach my editing process.
