Favorite referencing style

APA is what I'm most familiar with, but I have a real soft spot for the elegant simplicity of an MLA reference list.

Why I became an editor

Proofreading is a field that complements both my greatest strengths (sensitivity, self-discipline, and attention to detail) and my greatest weaknesses (chief among them being relentless pedantry). When I was looking for a position that would allow me the flexibility I needed to succeed in school, proofreading was an obvious decision and one I haven't regretted.

Background and experience

I am studying sociology and English and I completed an undergraduate certificate in the multidisciplinary field of library and information science. As such, I have a keen understanding of the conventions of modern academic writing, including citation styles. Even before I began proofreading, I had a reputation as the go-to proofreader for my family and friends. In an amateur capacity, I have edited everything from school essays to professional resumes to holiday cards.

Why I love proofreading and editing

There are many things I love about proofreading, but by far my favorite is how much I learn on the job. Whether I’m reading a paper on a subject I know nothing about or discovering an obscure quirk of the English language, I’m always gaining new knowledge. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with my clients’ work.

Favorite book:

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson is my favorite book.

Hobbies:

On the rare occasions that I'm not proofreading or studying, I'm usually reading, baking, or volunteering at a local library.

Editing tips:

I highly recommend taking a short break in between rounds of editing. When it comes to catching small errors, a fresh pair of eyes can be a surprisingly powerful tool.
