Why I became an editor

Writing is like breathing to me. I've always kept a diary, and being the daughter of a musician, I've written a few original songs. My first career choice was theater, but I always wanted to find something else that could provide more financial security. I signed up for the journalism program in college, and during my studies I learned that helping others express themselves was another passion of mine. I love taking someone's words and making them beautiful.

Background and experience

While earning my AA in journalism, I wrote for Santa Monica College's newspaper, The Santa Monica Corsair. I have also written for the website TheCultureTrip.com and for a newspaper read by Brazilians who live in the US. Outside of that, I have collaborated with the production company, Martini Productions, as a scriptwriter, and I worked as a freelance writer, editor, copywriter, designer, and online marketer for various clients.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love taking words and cleaning them up so that they flow seamlessly. I especially enjoy editing and proofreading creative works, but I also have experience with some academic work, as well as copywriting. I've also learned so much from taking a proofreading course at Proofreading Academy, such as the differences in types of English dialects. That class helped me clean up on things like grammar, punctuation, and the current rules on citations.

Favorite book:

My favorite book is Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier. Daphne’s writing is advanced without being pretentious. I love psychological thrillers, stories about women, and the classics.

Hobbies:

I love theater and student films, spending time with my husband and our family, traveling, hiking, doing yoga, meditating, reading, singing, and playing my guitar.

Editing tips:

I read the document first, then go back to the beginning to proofread with a list of things to look out for. After taking a break, I read it again to catch things that I might have missed.
