5 Things You Need to Create a Productive Work Environment

Productivity doesn’t come naturally to everyone: it’s taken us two and a half hours so far to write this sentence, for example. But there are things you can do if you’re struggling to finish an essay, such as ensuring your work environment is suitable for writing.

With that in mind, here’s a list of six things you need to create a productive work environment.

1. The Right Location

Where you go is very important. If you’re working from home, make sure to find somewhere that is comfortable, well-lit, and which offers a little privacy (writing is much more difficult if your housemate is playing video games noisily in the same room).

Alternatively, there are many other places you can go, including the university library, coffee shops, or study spaces on campus. It all depends on what suits you best!

2. A Tidy Workspace

Although you don’t have to keep everything in exact order at all times, a tidy workspace will often make you more productive. This is partly because having a tidy desk can help you focus, but also simply makes it easier to find books, notes, and so on when you need them!

3. Some Preparation

Speaking of which, before you sit down to work, do a quick check of what you’ll require. If you have everything to hand, it’ll save you having to get up to look for anything once you get going.

As well as the obvious things (books, a pen and paper, lecture notes, etc.), this could include refreshments, such as a drink and suitable snacks. You need to keep your energy up, after all!

4. Freedom from Distraction

Being able to focus on your work is obviously important for productivity. If you struggle with this, you should make an extra effort to eliminate possible sources of distraction.

One good tip here is using software to temporarily block any websites/apps on your computer/phone that you find distracting. There will be time for checking Twitter later!

5. Background Music

Finally, a bit of music can help make you more productive. Instrumental music is best here, though, so it’s probably not a good time to play NWA’s Straight Outta Compton on full blast.

Many people also find that using headphones helps them block out distracting noise when working in a busy environment, but scientists are divided on whether this actually helps!
