Why I became an editor

For most of my working life, I have provided administrative support within higher education, giving me a wealth of experience in creating reports, correspondence and promotional material. Over the years, many of my colleagues relied on me to give their work a final read-through to check for errors and ensure clarity.

Having taken a break from my career to care for my children, I decided to pursue my strengths and interests by studying to become a qualified proofreader and editor.

Background and experience

I have had a number of administrative roles within higher education. In these roles, I was responsible for creating correspondence and reports as well as servicing and minuting several committees.

I have also worked for a private consultancy, where I was responsible for data collection, analysis and creation of reports. We were commissioned to provide bespoke reports to benchmark the human resources function of the business within their sector.

Why I love proofreading and editing

Over the years, I have realised that I really enjoy the process of transforming a jumble of words and notes taken at meetings into meaningful and clear sentences. I also love reading and learning, so it is ideal for me to be able to read another person’s work and use my skills to help them to express their ideas.

Editing tips:

Before correcting any errors, it is important to read a document through to understand what the author wants to convey and consider who their audience will be. The aim is to preserve their voice.
